PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

March-April 2004

Dear Packaging Professional:

What is “cold chain management”?  Why is it important?  In short, cold chain is the series of events during the life cycle of a product, from manufacturer to end user, for which temperature control must be maintained.  It is important in order to maintain the stability, efficacy, potency, and shelf life of the product.  Temperature controlled packaging plays a critical role in this process.

Bill Blezard from Source Packaging of NE, will lead us through an interesting discussion about cold chain management.  The presentation will also touch on the packaging of dangerous goods and their unique supply chain requirements.

In addition, representatives from several cold chain companies will be available to discuss their products and services.  There will be “table top” displays open during the cocktail hour.  This will be a fantastic way to make new contacts within the packaging industry.

The meeting will be held at Snuffy’s Pantagis Renaissance located on Route 22 East in Scotch Plains, NJ on Thursday, April 22, starting at 6:00pm.  Mark your calendar now!  The evening promises to be fun and informative.  Our friends and colleagues from other local IOPP chapters (Meadowlands & Philadelphia) are also invited and welcome to join us.  Take advantage of what the IOPP has to offer and participate.  Be sure to bring a friend too.

Support your local IOPP NJ chapter... Attend!

Sincerely,

Christopher Mastroly

IoPP NJ Chapter President

February 2004

Dear Packaging Professional:

Product counterfeiting can have a major impact on brand equity and consumer confidence resulting in lost revenue and poor customer loyalty.  The safety and efficacy of the affected products, especially pharmaceutical products, is of great concern.  Various technologies are available to assist companies differentiate between counterfeit products and legitimate products.  These options include special inks and laminates, barcodes, IR coding systems, holograms, 2-D symbols, RFID, among others.

Rob Ryckman from CCL Label will lead us through a fascinating discussion about anti-counterfeit technology.  The presentation will place special emphasis on RFID and its potential to revolutionize the supply chain.  Rob is going to explain how it all works.

In addition, representatives from several companies will be available to discuss their anti-counterfeit products and packaging applications.  There will be “table top” displays open during the cocktail hour.  This will be a fantastic way to make new contacts within the packaging industry.

The meeting will be held at Snuffy’s on Route 22 East in Scotch Plains, NJ on Thursday, February 26, starting at 6:00pm.

 January 2004

Happy New Year from the IoPP NJ Chapter!

The IoPP had a good year in 2003.  Membership numbers are up, event attendance has swelled, and the organization has been revitalized.  Last year was a good year for the IoPP NJ Chapter as well.  The NJ Chapter officers continue to have a positive attitude, with an enthusiastic outlook for the next few years.  We have an exciting line up of events scheduled for this year.  We are dedicated to bringing you interesting meeting topics, fun events and appealing plant tours. We hope that you share our point of view on the future of IoPP.

I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight our 2003 accomplishments.

2003 - In Review

1Q03:

* On-boarding of several new NJ Chapter officers

* Meetings to discuss the impact of changes at the IoPP National level

* Ideas for cutting expenses due to limited funding

APRIL:

Barcoding Presentation - Uniform Code Council (UCC) - Great Turnout!

JUNE:

Annual NJ Chapter Golf Outing at NJ National - Big Success!

SEPTEMBER:

Tri-chapter board meeting (New Jersey, Meadowlands, Philadelphia) with IoPP National

OCTOBER:

Joint meeting with the New York American Marketing Association (NYAMA): "Does Your Brand Package Reflect Your Brand Personality?" - Excellent Presentation!

DECEMBER:

NJ Chapter Membership Survey - The survey results have been tallied!

(If you have not yet responded, please do so.  We need your input!)

In addition, the NJ Chapter board members have been hard at work improving old practices and thinking of new ideas to make our chapter better and improve communication with our members.  For example, we created the local NJ Chapter web site www.iopp.org/newjersey.  This web site will contain NJ Chapter meeting announcements, updates from the IoPP National calendar of events, job postings, vendor advertisements, golf outing information, among other things.  The electronic newsletter has also replaced the regular mailers, which are expensive and not very efficient for communicating information.  We continue to update our email distribution list to add new members and keep up with changes from current members.  Please contact us if you have not been receiving emails from the IoPP NJ Chapter, or if you have any ideas or suggestions to improve our website.  This is a great year to get more involved with the NJ Chapter.  We can always use fresh ideas and volunteers.  We are looking for an experienced person to help maintain our website on a monthly basis.  We would also like to hear from you about posting job opportunities or to advertise your company on our web site.

The topic for our February meeting is “Anti-Counterfeit Technology”.  The topic for our April meeting is “Cold Chain Packaging and Handling of Temperature Sensitive & Hazardous Products”.  The social outings kick in as the weather begins to heat up.  We’ll start with a brewery tour / happy hour event in May.

The annual IoPP NJ Chapter golf outing will take place on June 17, 2004.  Good news, we are staying at NJ National Golf Course!  The club house renovations are complete so we’re really looking forward to this event.  For those who have not attended the IoPP NJ Chapter golf outing in recent years, NJ National is a beautiful and challenging golf course.  It has been considered to be one of the premier new golf courses since it first opened in June 1997.  This is the most fun golf outing of the season, and the best value!  Stay tuned for more details...

Please bookmark the IoPP web site, www.iopp.org/newjersey, and check it often to stay informed about upcoming events and news at the National and Local levels.

Lastly, be sure to support your local IOPP NJ chapter... Attend!

Best Regards,

Christopher Mastroly

IOPP NJ Chapter President

Job Details:
Irving Tissue, Inc. Manager of Product Packaging

A. Background

Irving Tissue Inc. (ITI) is a dynamic, twelve year old subsidiary of the Irving Forest Products Company headquartered in Philadelphia, PA. Irving Forest Products Company is wholly owned by the Irving family of New Brunswick, Canada….a 100 year old family business with interests in a variety of industries, i.e., oil, oil services, convenience stores, ship building, steel and concrete manufacturing, food processing, transportation/trucking, newspapers, etc. The Irving Tissue leadership team in the US is headed up by Robert Higgins, Sr. Vice President – U.S. Business supported on the marketing side by Alan Barc, VP Marketing & Product Development and Nils Classen, Director of Marketing.

Irving Forest Products Company has a vertically integrated business model with ownership of 6 million+ acres of woodlands, 27 saw mills, lumber and pulp manufacturing capabilities as well as three finishing plants (Moncton, New Brunswick; Ft. Edward, NY; Toronto, Ontario) for Irving Tissue’s production of paper towels, bathroom tissue, facial tissue, and napkins. Irving Tissue’s product line includes both branded and premium private label products sold in the US and Canada.

On the branded side of the business, Irving Tissue manufactures and markets two key brands…Scotties facial tissue and SoftWeve bathroom tissue (both former Scott Paper brands divested by Kimberly Clark in 1996). Scotties has shown spectacular growth since 1996 and currently has an 11% share of the US facial tissue market (vs. a 2% share in 1996) and is the #2 brand in a large number of Eastern and Midwestern markets. Soft Weve was introduced in 1998 and is primarily a regional brand (Boston to Washington, DC).

On the private label side, Irving Tissue offers retail customers a comprehensive, premium private label portfolio of products (paper towels, facial tissue, bathroom tissue). From two customers in 1996, Irving Tissue has grown this private label business to 30+ customers today including many leading edge retailers (Wegmans, Stop&Shop/Ahold, Harris Teeter, Wal-Mart, etc.). In fact, the Company was just selected by Wal-Mart as the source for a new premium bathroom tissue product (eastern half of the U.S.) which will significantly increase Irving Tissue’s 2003 and 2004 revenue. In Canada, Irving Tissue has approximately 20% of the private label paper products market.

With the rapid growth of Irving Tissue, senior management has recognized the need for additional operations leadership in the Company, i.e., a Manager of Product Packaging.
